Background

Following routine planned maintenance inspections, the existing boiler system was deemed to be uneconomical to run and past it’s operational life. PriDE undertook a full survey of the existing boilers and associated system; and as a consequence the installation was identified as unserviceable on the grounds of functional, environmental, safety and health assessments.

The survey also found that corrosion and chemical leakage from the old system had contaminated the surrounding land. DE was notified of this and an entry was made in the Contaminated Land Register.

With the winter season fast approaching a quick response was necessary in order to maintain this critical service. The short programme for delivery was made more complex by a sloping site location, the size of existing components to be removed and the proximity of a large water tower and the station headquarters building. The replacement boiler was installed on time and within budget, and will reduce the carbon footprint of the barracks, as gas, water and oil consumption will decrease by 10-30%.
